Developing the Hearts and Minds of Our Children.
Our school is a wonderful place for a child to learn and grow through the Primary Stage of their education.
Every member of staff has been carefully selected to provide a warm, loving, caring and stimulating environment in which your child will be educated to the highest standard.
The Foundation Stage
As soon as your child enters our Foundation stage in the Nursery Class, he/she begins a very special journey through St Leonard's C of E Primary School.
We have two classes in our Foundation Stage - Nursery and Reception.
Mrs Leonard is our Nursery teacher and Miss Griffiths, the Reception Class teacher. Both teachers, along with their Nursery Nurses plan and structure the Foundation curriculum together.
The Nursery class provides part-time places for 52 children. Children attend for 5 morning or 5 afternoon sessions per week.
Children may attend the Nursery class from the age of 3 years.
Children are admitted into the Reception class during the Year in which they reach their fifth birthday.
For children who have already attended our Nursery class, this is a wonderfully smooth transition, with no traumas for children or parents! The children are already part of our school, have many friends in the school and have built-up relationships with the staff.
The National Curriculum
The National Curriculum provides the programme of study which all children, from the age of five, follow.
The children are taught the three core subjects of the National Curriculum - English, Mathematics and Science - and the foundation subjects - History, Geography, Technology (including Information Technology and Design Technology), Art, Music, Physical Education, PSHE and Citizenship and Religious Education.
These subjects are sometimes taught separately and sometimes integrated and combined with other subject areas.
The Literacy and Numeracy Strategies
All year groups are taught within the frameworks recommended by the Literacy and Numeracy Strategies.
Already, the School's high quality of teaching in these areas is having an impact on our standards.
Information Technology
As a school, we are very 'forward-looking' as far as ICT is concerned.
As well as at least one PC in every classroom, we have a large number of laptop computers in school, which ensures that, in lessons, the children have at least one computer between two. This enables us to, not only teach the skills of ICT, but also to use computers as a tool in all areas of the curriculum to enhance the childrens' attainment and progress.
In addition to the computers, we also have interactive whiteboards and printers in each class room, network printers, video cameras and a Flexicam, which are used to aid the teaching of all areas of the curriculum.
We have also purchased 'web cams' which enable us to undertake 'video conferencing' and we are in the process of updating our web page to include our very own radio programme.
Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
At St Leonard's we believe that PSHE is an essential part of the Curriculum. It is at the heart of our day to day lives, reflecting and reinforcing our Christian ethos.
Within our school community there is a need for everyone to understand the importance of good social and interpersonal skills. Good relationships between the children themselves, and between the children and the staff, are essential in creating a supportive learning environment.
By providing our children with the opportunity to explore interpersonal behaviour and how this effects the individual, group and the community, we will give them the confidence and independence that will help them become informed and responsible citizens.
As part of our Health Education programme, we provide information about healthy eating, caring for the body and, at the end of Key Stage 2, a structured programme of drugs education, including tobacco and alcohol. We also deliver a programme of Sex Education.
Citizenship
St Leonard's has an active School Council, made up of children from all age groups, elected democratically by the children themselves. The School Council interacts with the Senior Management Team and provides first-hand experience of the process of democracy and an introduction to the resulting responsibilities.
By experiencing real elections, and seeing how the School Council is run, children develop an understanding of the mechanics of democracy and the institutions that lie at the heart of our own democracy.
Religious Education
This is central to our belief, Mission statement and teaching at St Leonard's. As a Church of England Aided Primary School, we follow the syllabus as laid down by the Blackburn Diocese. This mainly involves the study of Christianity. Two other religions, Judaism and Islam, are also studied.
Collective worship and a Christian attitude to life is developed and seen as central to the ethos that permeates the life of the school. This includes the use of daily prayers in both collective worship and class.
Church Services
As this is a Church school, it is expected that every pupil will attend Church services. All family members, relatives and friends are invited to attend any of these services.
Harvest Festival (First Friday in October-9:30am).
Christmas Carol Service (A Christmas concert is sometimes held in school).
Christingle (Usually in late January).
Ash Wednesday (Junior children).
Mothering Sunday.
Easter (A service is held immediately before the Easter holiday).
Ascension Day.
Leavers' Service (A service for the Year 6 children leaving for High School).
Policies and Schemes of Work for all curriculum areas are available from the school office.
